Precisely How To Take Superb Candid Photographs

Monday, March 21st, 2011

As the title suggests, candid photography is the art of taking pics while the person is not aware they have a camera on them. The fascination with this style of photography is you are usually shooting the true emotion at that moment, rather than something which has been created for the camera.

The real truth of candid photography is that a great photographer will always make it look easy – they can get photos which are spectacular and make amateurs feel that if they just walk around and take hundreds of photos, one or more are going to be of a pro quality.

Alas this is not the situation – having the capacity to take a photo at exactly the right moment can only be done from realizing when the moment is coming.

It’s a skill which really can be learned, but it is rarely one that comes with no practice. So, just how are you able to strengthen your own talents in this area?

The first thing is learning how to position yourself so that your person is continually within shot, without getting in the way. Also, you have to make sure that you have always got the camera prepared to take the picture – the right moment will come and go within moments if you’re not prepared.

Another excellent strategy will be to develop into a student of crowds, even if you’re not taking photos. Begin the process of improving your powers of observation and work at growing your knowledge of peoples inner thoughts solely using their body language and facial expressions. As time passes this will almost help you become ‘psychic’ with your ability to predict when a great shot is coming.

From a technical perspective you always have to be conscious of the light along with your environment. It isn’t much good having an understanding of the best time to take the photo, if that photo is wrecked since you were in the wrong spot to take advantage of the conditions.

And you should become proficient at focusing the attention away from the equipment. Typically if you are around a group of people and you’re taking photographs, people might be alert to this and so make an attempt to pose if they can, thinking they will improve the photo by doing this.

If you can interact with these people in such a way that makes them overlook the camera, then you’re much more likely to capture the candid shots you are looking for.

So focus on your positioning as well as your skills of observation and you are sure to boost the effectiveness with regards to capturing candid pictures that truly record the moment.

Some Ideas About What To Photograph On A Cold, Wet Day

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Ever planned a day out indulging in your favourite hobby (photography, naturally) only to wake up to the sound of raindrops hitting the window like gravel on a drum. Well rather than roll over and pull the quilt over your head, why not have a look around and see what you can find to amuse yourself with your camera indoors instead.

Indoor photography is very entertaining and if all you have is a camera, then that’s just exactly what you need. If you have a flash gun, you have a little more versatility, if you have several flashguns, there’s little you won’t be able to achieve. Any items you have lying around the house can be pressed into service. Windows, table lamps, torches, even candles can all be utilised to provide that beautiful play of light and shadow that will lift your images above the ordinary. Bits of plywood or mdf or hardboard from the shed make excellent backgrounds, and if there’s a bit of leftover paint you can make use of that too. Although you may not have any lying around I have quite a few pieces of Artists board for framing that I frequently make use of – so next time you’re near an art supply shop, pop in and get a few sheets in different colours.

A tripod is handy, I find a tabletop model really useful. Otherwise you will have to find some other way to support your camera. And finally a table. I have a small folding one I just use for photography. It provides me with a lovely reflective black surface.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Flowers
Flowers are a good choice, because of their own inherent beauty they photograph well. Choose a background that complements the colour of the flowers. Think about how you are going to light it, if you use window light be aware that light levels drop off quite dramatically across the width of a typical room. If you use a single flash, use it off the camera and even consider lighting the flower from behind so that the petals glow with transmitted light.

2. Fruit & Vegetables
Fruit is that staple of the still life, and you might consider the odd vegetable too. Use a single fruit like an orange and practice lighting it from different directions, side, top, front, back, and if you’ve got something translucent or transparent to stand it on (or even an old lightbox from your film days) then you can even light it from beneath. Just doing this teaches you a lot about lighting. When you tire of that, add a few different fruits to make a still life, add some props – a bowl, a knife and a sliced fruit perhaps. Let your imagination have fun.

3. Prepared Food
Food is one of my favourite subjects: cake, cookies, chocolate, cook something or persuade someone else to do that and dress it up, napkins on the table, a fork, glass, wine so that your photograph looks like you caught it just in time before someone ate it. With food photography it is the accessories and background that make or break the picture.

4. Ornaments
Ornaments, toys even, can be pressed into service. Be aware though, if you are taking close-ups, that scratches and marks will be more obvious and may need a lot of Photoshopping to correct afterwards. Take your photograph from an unusual angle so the object is not seen the way it normally is.

5. Pets
If you have pets in the house then press them into service as models. Spend an hour or two stalking them and playing with and watching for a cute pose. Make sure you focus on their eyes. Just be mindful if they start to tire of the game. Leave them in peace and come back to it a little later. Check out CritterStudio if you want to see how it’s done.

6. Family
Members of your family or friends may be persuaded to model for you. If you are using window light you may want to consider using a white board, a sheet or some other white surface to provide a little fill to lighten the shadow side of the face.

7. Puzzles
Go around the house and make a collection of about a dozen or so objects and then take close-ups from unusual angles. Go into your photo-editing software and assemble them together as one jpeg and then email it to all your friends and ask them to identify the objects.

After this you may realise that you now is the time for a new camera, if so then check out some high quality digital cameras and start to enjoy your hobby whatever the weather.

Have You Ever Wondered How To Photograph A Splash Of Water

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

How to photograph a splash of water

High speed Photography – Water Droplet

Everyone has come across something and at some point had that ‘how did they do that’ question in their mind. Whether you are a still life photographer, artist or just someone who appreciates unusual images / objects. Needing to know how something is created is often what drives us to learn new skills or improve on old ones. Whether it’s a new song on the radio that you just can’t wait to get home and try and work out on your guitar or an amazing image that you just can’t get your head around.

I have to admit with the internet, video sites and blogs available, discovering secrets to new techniques and ‘how to’ guides for still life photography is incredibly easy. In this blog I reveal how to achieve an amazing and simple water splash image using basic props and high speed photography.

Firstly you will need the following things that every Product photographer should have:

• DSLR camera
• Off camera flash gun with sync trigger
• A tripod
• An elastic band
• A biro pen
• Remote release cable / camera with remote of timer
• Macro lens preferable but it can be achieved with a 18-55 or equivalent lens
• Paint tray or dark plastic tub of the equivalent size
• Sandwich bag / plastic bag
• A stand and boom arm or anything that you can rig up that will hold a bag full of water still approx 4-5 ft off the ground.
• A white piece of matt card
• A towel!

To start with the most important piece of equipment above is the towel. You may think I’m going mad but trust me grab a hand towel or kitchen towel. You will be dealing with water and electronic equipment which don’t mix! If you accidently spill water on your equipment its good to be prepared trust me!

The setup
1. What you need to set up first is somewhere to have your paint tray / tub to sit. A table or sturdy workmate is more than sufficient.
2. Next get your paint tray and fill it 2/3 full of water.
3. Attach the white card to the paint tray by using either tape or sandwiching the card between the tray and another heavy object. Attach the card in portrait orientation to the paint tray. You want the paint tray facing you length ways with the card attached to the back of the tray. This enables you to have the maximum amount of water between you and the card for reflections.
4. Next get your plastic bag. (Usually a small sealable sandwich bag is a good size) and fill it 2/3 full with water. Seal it and tie an elastic band round it.
5. Set up your boom arm 2 – 3 feet above the paint tray that’s now full of water. Attach the water bag to it with the elastic band. Make sure everything is stable and not going to fall over!
6. Setup your flash gun to the left or right hand side of the card. What you want to do is have the flash gun fire on to the card only. Not in the water. To stop any stray light trial moving the flash further forwards and further back or further up and down. If you get too much spill light in to the water try using a home made snoot. (Piece of card made in to a cylinder shape and slid over the flash head).
7. Almost there…..Setup your camera on its tripod and have it looking slightly down in to the water. The distance between the tray any you camera really depends on what lens you have. Set it up initially so that you can see all the water and just the edges of the tray.

Camera Settings

Flash 1/16
Aperture :F8
Shutter speed : 250/1
Auto White Balance

These are the optimum settings so that you get a nice bright reflection but don’t over expose and get a washed out image. However as will all still life photography do experiment with the shutter and flash settings to find the best effect for you. Take some test images and see how the lighting is before you start the water dripping.

If you are happy with what you see then pierce the plastic bag with a pin. You will find that a steady flow of drops come out and 99% of the time hit the same spot in the water tray. This is very important as it will enable you to get the shot you want and keep it in focus.

8. Ok so the water is dripping in the same spot and you need to focus in. You will need to switch to manual focus as auto focus will not be able to cope no matter what camera / lens u have. The secret to focusing on the water droplet is a biro pen!
What you need to do is put the biro in to the water where the drip is entering the water. I have found that a biro with writing on it helps as you can manually focus on the letter where the drip lands. Once you have focused remove the biro and allow the water to settle for a few moments.

NOTE: Try focusing with the biro as vertical as possible, if you position the pen almost flat when you focus then the splash that often bounces out of the water will not be in focus!

Then start taking photos. You will find that if you watch the drip fall and release the shutter a split second after it falls then you will catch the drip entering / bouncing out of the water. Practise makes perfect!

The most appealing photos not only show the splash but a few ripples too. You may have to move your camera or zoom in / out to achieve this. Also try photos from a slightly higher angle and slightly lower angle. You will find what works best for you. However remember that you will need to re-focus every time you move anything!

Try new things
Once you have got some shots that are keepers and have perfected the technique there are a number of things that you can try to add to the cool effect that you can already create.

Firstly try changing the white balance to tungsten. This will give you photos a very natural looking blue hue.

Secondly (once restoring the WB to AWB) try changing the colour of the background card. Why not try, red or yellow or even a nice pattern of mixed colours?

Top 3 Reasons To Get The Canon 50mm F1.8

Sunday, February 27th, 2011

I am sure many of you have bought a new Digital SLR or you have already had one. But one problem that always comes up is the fact that the standard kit lens is never good enough. In this post I will be going through the top 3 reasons you should buy a Canon 50mm f1.8 lens.

1) The Cost : Let’s face it. One of the first things which we all look for is the price of the lens. I think I’ll introduce it straight away because if it’s too expensive then it may not appeal to many people. The normal price that I see it selling for is usually around £80. However, you can buy it completely brand new on ebay for around £60. If you are quite experienced with cameras then you’d know that this kind of price for a lens is relatively cheap . If you’re a beginner then let me tell you, you’re not going to get much cheaper than that! Some Canon lenses can sell for £1,300 and that’s not even the most expensive. So this is the first reason I’m telling you to buy this lens. It’s one of the lowest priced ones in the market!

2) The Large Aperture : If you don’t know what this means then allow me to explain. The size of the hole at the front of the lens is called Aperture. This hole is what lets the light through into the lens. The reason that you would want to change the size of the hole is because it allows you to do many different things. For example, if you look at professional photographs then you will often notice that the background is completely blurred out. This look is achieved by using a small F stop. So using a small f stop, your photographs will look more professional as a result.
Another thing that a large aperture allows you to do, is use a faster shutter speed.
Humans always wobble and this means that when we are holding a camera in our hand, our pictures will look more shaky as a result. Shutter speed is basically how fast the camera lets in light for. So if the shutter speed is very fast then our photos will be darker as we havn’t let in enough light. If we increase the size of the hole so more light gets through, we can subsequently use a faster shutter speed without making our pictures blurry. If we use a faster shutter speed our pictures will be much more crisp, making our pictures look much better.
The fact the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens offers a high aperture it also means one other thing. It means we can also use a lower ISO. ISO is a little more hard to explain but ISO is (in VERY basic terms) is the sensitivity of the sensor. So the higher the ISO (more sensitive sensor) means you can take pictures in lower light conditions. If you have a larger aperture, then more light is entering your camera anyway and so you can use a lower ISO. The reason that you would want to do this is because a high ISO can sometimes cause pictures to look noisy. So once again the 50mm lens can improve the quality of your pictures in numerous ways.

3) The Weight and Size : Its dimensions are about 68.2mm x 41.0mm and it weighs 130g. Do you know the meaning of this? It is Canon’s shortest and lightest lens. This is something which is overlooked. When you take up photography and start collecting lenses then there will be no problem in taking this lens around as it will take up hardly any space in your bag.

So, these are my three top reasons to get this lens. I hope it has helped and encourages you to get this lens as a good alternative to the standard kit lens!

Lessons For All New And Professional Photographer’s

Friday, February 18th, 2011

I have recently started on a new activity. I have used many kinds of cameras and have managed to get ordinary photos out of them.
It was recommended by a workmate that I search for some help on the Internet. It wasn’t long before I had found some truly good sites:.

Some sites range from purchasing a camera for the first time to the expert playing with shutter speeds and light to get some bizarre shots.
The point and shoot camera still has a place in the market but they say if you are wanting to shoot more professionally then you will want a camera that can handle all the extras and accessories.

What is so amazing is that they tell you to read the manual. I know! This, my wife tells me that every time. Reading it form a pro just feels better. Next time I buy a camera, I will read the manual.

The manual will tell you about your camera settings and where to find them. It also recommends which settings to use on what photos but leaves lots of room for you to try.
The one thing that frustrated me was the delay between pushing the button and the photo: been taken. With small changes and understanding my camera I don’t even notice it any more. It’s wonderful what a little reading can do.

It doesn’t stop there. These sites go on to tell you what a great picture should look like. Hey, I thought it was good enough to get the subject in the view finder and click but No. Now I know why most of my photos have these starange friends with branches sticking out there heads or a bright light on their shoulders. Content is everything, so I’m told (that’s not from my wife). It’s all line, shape, texture, color and pattern. If you know what I mean?
This is what I did understand . Always carry your camera with you and make sure the batteries are charged. You can’t take a photo if you don’t have your camera. You know how it works, leave your camera at home and you see pigs flying but you can’t prove it. Where is the photo?
Next, take a bunch more photos. With digital you can delete the ones that are truly bad. Hey, you have to get one right in every thousand or so.
The next tip I got was to take photos of what feels right for you, don’t rush the shot.

Go through the basics and mentally check you have covered each of them, then make sure you see what you want and click!. You have your picture.
Some sites even go as far as telling you how to mount the photo and then even the lighting when you hang it.
Always remember this.
“The most important thing is to have fun while taking the shot!”

Digital Photography Open For Everybody.

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Trying to compare digital photos to old time film photos, sometimes results are pretty much similar, but as the digital photo can be improved by editing, there is obviously no competitor for a digital photo. It is not any different if old school photographers would swear on their most sacred artifacts that the old photos were the ultimate best, the proofs are most obvious. Conversely, the experience during a capture of those photos matters. The separate inspiration and imagination during a capture of those photos are real value of a work of art. Whether a material or the tool used to do those pictures, those all are placed in the background for an instant, and final product takes of the firm earned position.

Everyone can take a photo. You only should grasp the camera and press the button accurately and that is it. The new photo has been made. However, quality and point of that photo is where the distinction is. As noted above, the skill of a capturing a photo should be included into a correct place of your brain. For instance, we can compare painting art. We cannot really find a genius in painting as times Leonardo Davinchi. The same technology, so surprising as it is, has suppressed many born artists which don’t find a problem where all can be produced and published instantly. And those photographers are upset because of the infinite quantity of thoughts they have about the search of nonexistent excellence. Always speaking about rational in relation to methods of photography, you should be always placed at some kind of stable position during the photo session. Today, we have many offers for cameras which would decrease the risk of the moved photo, but on the other hand, we are not talking about professionals, but about the people having problems with their pulse, a shake, nervousness or so on. Those cameras may work with the gravity center, and they are definitely not the cheapest cameras in the market. Taking photos at night, the obvious approach should be in having a lot of artificial light as far as possible and to find a good corner, and the easy surface of reflection would be extremely useful. The capture of good photos is mainly a question of how we have good light among other insignificant reasons.

Even with digital the photographs, we shouldn’t search for perfection which is the concept made up by the illiterate people. There is no such thing as perfection. Life is imperfect , and all of us are imperfect, and it is what makes the beauty. For this reason we can tell undoubtedly that all depends upon a condition to take pictures and be able to grasp the spirit. Everything you may need can be limited with the photo camera with the minimal requirements, a steady hand or a tripod when you have a problem with it, and a plenty of imagination. The technical part and experience can be replaced by our old friend, the common sense.

There are so many hobbies and photography is one of them. Of course one has to know photography terminology to be able to move forward successfully but if you have just begun going in for photography it would be intelligent to learn photography. In any case, if you are fond of photography you are invited to this digital photography site where one can learn lots of helpful info on the subject.
